Basis of Issue Plan - BOIP
A. DESCRIPTION: THE AN/PDR-77() WILL DETECT ALPHA RADIATION AND
WILL INDICATE ON A METER THE RATE IN COUNTS PER MINUTE
(CPM) OR MILLIRADS PER HOUR (MR/H) AT WHICH THE RADIATION PARTICLES
ARE IMPINGING UPON THE DETECTOR. THE RADIAC SET: AN/PDR-77()
FEATURES AUTO RANGING DIGITAL DISPLAY USER SETABLE ALARMS. THE
RADIAC SET AN/PDR-77() WILL BE COMPATIBLE WITH THREE PROBES. THE
PRIMARY PROBE IS AN APLHA PROBE, AUXILLARY PROBES ARE THE X-RAY PROBE
AND A BETA/GAMMA PROBE.
B. CAPABILITIES: THE RADIAC SET: AN/PDR-77() WILL HAVE THE
CAPABILITY OF DETECTING AND MEASURING ALPHA RADIATION AND PROVIDING A
COUNTS PER MINUTE (CPM) RATE ON A METER.
C. EMPLOYMENT: THE RADIAC SET IS A NON TACTICAL SYSTEM THAT WILL
BE USED PRIMARILY BY EXPLOSIVE ORDNANCE DISPOSAL (EOD), ORDNANCE,
AND CHEMICAL UNITS TO PERFORM THE PEACETIME MISSION OF NUCLEAR
ACCIDENT AND INCIDENT RESPONSE AND ASSISTANCE (NAIRA). THIS INCLUDES
BOTH MILITARY AND CIVILIAN NUCLEAR ACCIDENTS/INCIDENTS. THE NAIRA
TEAM USES THE RADIAC SET TO SURVEY THE AREA SURROUNDING THE SITE OF
A NUCLEAR ACCIDENT/INCIDENT FOR POSSIBLE CONTAMINATION. THE RADIAC
SET WILL ALSO BE USED IN THE MONITORING AND MAINTAINING OF NUCLEAR
WEAPONS DEVICES AND EQUIPMENT WITH RADIOACTIVE SOURCES (M43A1
CHEMICAL DETECTOR). POWER REQUIREMENT 9VDC SUPPLIED BY THREE (3)
BA-3090 NINE (9) VOLT BATTERIES. TWO ADDITIONAL BA-3090 NINE (9)
VOLT BATTERIES ARE REQUIRED FOR THE X-RAY PROBE.
