A. DESCRIPTION: THE AN/VDR-2 RADIAC SET IS A LIGHTWEIGHT, TACTICAL, DOSE-RATE METER. IT HAS ANCILLARY EQUIPMENT FOR MOUNTING IN TACTICAL GROUND VEHICLES. IT IS COMPOSED OF ONE EACH RADIACMETER IM-243()/VDR-2; ONE EACH PROBE RADIAC DT-616()/VDR-2;AND ONE EACH CARRYING POUCH WITH STRAP. THE RATE METER HAS AN INTERNAL SENSOR FOR PERFORMING DISMOUNTED TACTICAL AREA SURVEYS. THE PROBE WITH A CABLE IS SUPPLIED FOR MONITORING OF PERSONNEL AND SUPPLIES. B. CAPABILITIES: THE AN/VDR-2 WILL PROVIDE A MEANS FOR CONDUCTING DISMOUNTED AND VEHICULAR RADIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AND PERFORMING RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT. THE DEVICE WILL DETECT AND WILL MEASURE GAMMA RADIATION AND WILL DETECT BETA RADIATION. A PRESELECTED, AUDIBLE, AND VISUAL WARNING CAPABILITY WILL BE PROVIDED AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE SET. C. EMPLOYMENT: THE AN/VDR-2 WILL BE EMPLOYED BY COMPANY AND PLATOON ELEMENTS, SELECTED SQUADS AND TEAMS, AND OTHER SELECTED SECTIONS TO CONDUCT RADIOLOGICAL SURVEYS AND/OR TO MONITOR PERSONNEL AND EQUIPMENT. D. BASIS OF ISSUE: THE AN/VDR-2 WILL REPLACE THE RADIAC SET AN/PDR-27 (Q19339) AND THE RADIACMETER IM-174/PD (Q21483) COMPLETELY. (1) FOR INCLUSION IN APPENDIX C, AR 310-34: (A) ONE PER COMPANY, TROOP, DETACHMENT, OR BATTERY HQ ELEMENT. (B) ONE PER PLATOON. (C) ONE PER SMOKE SQUAD. (D) TWO PER DECON SQUAD. (E) ONE PER UNIT HAVING A RECONNAISSANCE MISSION. (F) ONE PER VEHICLE OPERATING INDEPENDENTLY (E.G., AMBULANCE). (G) ONE PER SUB-UNIT REQUIRING A CAPABILITY TO DETECT LOW-LEVEL CONTAMINATION NOT OTHERWISE AUTHORIZED (E.G., MEDICAL SECTION). (H) ONE PER INTERMEDIATE DIRECT AND GENERAL SUPPORT MAINTENANCE SECTION. (I) ONE PER QUARTERMASTER WATER POINT. (J) ONE PER BATTALION MEDICAL SECTION. (K) TWO PER MODULAR MEDICAL TREATMENT SQUAD AND MODULAR MEDICAL SURGICAL SQUAD CAPABLE OF INDEPENDENT OPERATION. (L) ONE PER DIVISION MEDICAL SUPPLY SECTION (OR EQUIVALENT) AND HOSPITAL MEDICAL SUPPLY SECTION. (M) ONE PER MEDICAL TREATMENT/CLEARING PLATOON.
