GENERAL:
The Aircraft Survivability Equipment training device strategy is a building block concept to train aviators on the proper employment of Aircraft Survivability Equipment (ASE). The ASET II, pictured on the preceding page, is a desktop audiovisual trainer that teaches the fundamentals of ASE, threats and tactics at school and unit locations. ASET III is an embedded training concept that teaches ASE employment while in-flight. ASET IV, pictured on the following page, is a tactical threat emitting training device that teaches realistic force-on-force and collective team training under the "train as you fight" concept.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS:
ASET II is an interactive video disk based desk top training system developed to provide aviators fundamental training on ASE, threats, and tactics. It was developed to utilize the Electronic Information Delivery System (EIDS), pictured on the preceding page. The courseware is designed into three modes which are the tutorial, management, and game modes. The courseware addresses all rotary wing aircraft platforms and Special Electronic Mission Aircraft platforms. ASET II courseware provides individually self-paced instructions based on the unique requirements of each platform. Training reports on student progress are available through the ASET II. The effectiveness of ASET II for training has been degraded due to the obsolescence of the EIDS. An update to the ASE Training Requirements Document is in process to update ASET II to Interactive Multimedia Instruction (IMI). POCs for maintenance issues are CW4 Steve Woods, Ft Rucker, DSN 558-1861, and Andy Secoolish, Tobyhanna Army Depot, DSN 795-6427.
ASET III provides in-flight training to pilots in the proper tactical responses to counter the threat(s) appearing on the radar detecting/radar warning receiver indicator. ASE/threat interactions are simulated through the use of embedded training software.
ASET IV, also designated as the AN/TPQ-45, Electronic Warfare Training Set, is a group of ground-based air defense threat emitters that create an electronic warfare environment for training. It provides tactical training for aviation crews against anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) and surface-to-air (SAM) threats. Each system consists of two (2) AAA simulators, two (2) Infrared (IR) SAM simulators, one (1) radio frequency (RF) SAM, a command and control vehicle and six man portable air defense systems (MANPADS). The threat simulators are mounted on M1097 Heavy High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV). Production of the final (8th) module was completed Feb 98. Fielding of systems to the Combat Maneuver Training Centers has been completed with three (3) systems going to the National Training Center, one (1) system to the Joint Readiness Training Center, and one (1) system to the Combat Maneuver Training Center. Fielding of systems to the home stations, Ft Bragg, Ft Hood, and Ft Campbell has been delayed due to a shortage of sustainment funding. Planned upgrades to ASET IV to provide night fighting capability and to simulate the latest threats are partially funded and will begin during FY98.
