While not part of the C/S, defining what is on the vehicle, helps define what is not required on the C/S. It has been assumed here that the engine will be not be started from the C/S. Therefore, a means to do this had to be provided. On the target drones, a person climbs into the cockpit and starts the engine with a fire truck standing by. The UCAV will not have a cockpit (with an ejection seat) and it is assumed that the person starting the engine doesn’t want to stand right next to the vehicle. Therefore, a wired remote control panel seems to be a low cost way to achieve this. The concept is for the vehicle to have a maintenance hatch where the control panel is stowed. Also in this area is a place to insert a data transfer cartridge. There may be other dedicated controls and switches in the maintenance hatch. The remote control panel with have some engine instruments to monitor the start, a throttle control of some sort, and of course, an engine start and stop switch. It is assumed that there will be a display panel such as an LED display on the remote to display aircraft status for BIT, stores inventory etc. It is conceivable that the vehicle could be manually taxied using the remote panel. There will also be provisions for the remote panel operator to plug into an interphone and/or use the vehicles radios to communicate with the rest of the support crew and the airport control authorities.
