Notes:
COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENTS
The control station will contain a VHF/VHF voice radio which allows the controller to communicate with control towers, airport controllers, and other manned vehicles. The C/S will contain the radios, antennas, interphone, controls and displays for using this radio.
The control station will contain a SATCOM radio to provide two way communications for data and voice to the vehicle when it is beyond line of sight. It will contain the radio, LNA, diplexer, antennas interphone, data modems, controls and displays for using this radio.
The vehicle(s) will also contain a VHF/UHF voice radio which allow the controller to communicate from the vehicle when it is out of range of the control station radio. This radio will be a repeater for the SATCOM radio. The controller that has a UCAV on his radar scope will call it on his normal frequency and will expect a response. This arrangement will allow the operator at the C/S to communicate with the controller via normal UHF/VHF radio from the UCAV via a SATCOM relay. A variation of this may be to have another vehicle acting as a relay; and all the communication occurs via the UHF/VHF radio in the C/S. The C/S will provide control of the vehicles UHF/VHF and SATCOM radios as well as it own.
As mentioned before, the UCAV will have an IFF with at least Mode 3C and Mode S. The C/S will provide the command an control of the modes and codes of the IFF and must also be able to command an “IP IDENT”. The C/S must also have an IFF interrogator to interrogate the UCAV and be able to display the received codes, altitude and Modes S messages.
