CONTROL STATION CONCEPTUAL ELEMENTS
This represents what we brainstormed to be the conceptual elements of the UCAV ATD control station. Since this is to be an experimental vehicle, flexibility and growth are a major requirement. Our concept control station has a console that the operator would sit at to operate the vehicle. He would have at least one main display surface that may have many formats on it, or this could be many displays with individual formats. This station will have a keyboard and mouse, and stick and throttle. There needs to be at least two video monitors to display video from the aircraft, airport mounted cameras, or other sources of video. There needs to be video switching which allows the operator to pick the video sources displayed. There needs to be a panel with dedicated hardware switches for aircraft functions and similar panel for the control station functions. There needs to be a dedicated display for self test and bit status for both the control station and the aircraft. The control station also needs to be able to read and write to a data transfer cartridge that can be used both at the control station and the aircraft. The control station needs an uninterruptable power supply. This is assumed to consist of a sensor to sense loss of mains power, batteries and an inverter, and a backup generator. An “antenna” farm is also one of the control station elements. Along with the antenna farm are the transmitters and receivers required for communications.
