• There are a number of occasions when ships will be required to operate in close proximity to CV, CVN, LHA, LHD type ships. These large ships are refered to as “Aviation Ships” in this presentation.

• All Amphibious and CRUDES type ships need to familiarize themselves with the unique nature of operating close to aviation ships as plane guard; while all ship types are likely candidates for photo or unrep ops with avaition ships.

• We will discuss plane guard operations in a moment but you must always be alert when operating close to the aviation ship. Evolutions such as photo ops and UNREP demand extra vigilance, even though the aviation ship is aware of your position and courses and speeds are not expected to change radically, a number of ships operating close to one another limits your escape routes and plant or steering casualties often lead to undesirable results.

• If assigned to an air defense station close aboard the avaition ship for prolonged periods of time, expect complacency to set in on both ships.
