SEQUENCE OF EVENTS
0200 - CVN loses power to OOD’s primary surface search radar (SPS-67)
0210 - CVN sends F/L to CG notifying of engineering drills & course/speed chgs could be expected (CG receipts for F/L @ 0240); no mention of backing bells
0219 - CVN commences engineering drills & orders all ahead flank bell; does not communicate intentions to CG during this or any subsequent maneuver
Notes:
- The SPS-67 Radar is the only radar on the CVN OOD thought capable of detecting contacts directly astern at close range. The CVN’s top and bridge radars were not used until after the collision.
- The CG, unaware of the CVN’s engineering drills and the loss of comms, fell well out of station during the initial CVN flank bell.
