SHIPHANDLING FORCES UNCONTROLLABLE
Notes:
REFERENCE: MSI STUDENT GUIDE
UNCONTROLLABLE FORCES ARE GENERALLY CONSIDERED TO BE WIND AND CURRENT.
RECALL AS A RULE OF THUMB, 30 KNOTS OF WIND EQUATE TO 1 KNOT OF CURRENT (VARIES DEPENDENT ON SAIL AREA AND DRAFT). OTHER TENDENCIES ARE THAT A SHIP WILL LIE BROADSIDE TO THE WIND IF NOT MAKING WAY. BUT CONSIDER WHERE YOUR GREATEST SAIL AREA IS RELATIVE TO YOUR PIVOT POINT (FOR EXAMPLE, AO(J) WEATHER VANED DUE TO SUPERSTRUCTURE BEING FAR AFT). WHEN MAKING WAY, THE SHIP’S BOW WILL SEEK THE WIND. SHIPS NORMALLY BACK INTO THE WIND.
WITH REGARDS TO CURRENT , CURRENT WILL UNIFORMLY AFFECT THE SHIP. THE EXCEPTION IS WHEN THE ENTIRE SHIP IS NOT EXPOSED TO THE CURRENT, AS IN ENTERING OR LEAVING A SLIP.
