FOR THIS DISCUSSION WE WILL LOOK AT THREE CATEGORIES OF FORCES.
Uncontrollable - forces of nature, can not be regulated. Must be compensated for or employed to advantage by the shiphandler.
Controllable - Can be regulated by the shiphandler’s own actions
Semi-controllable - Result from the ship’s speed and location with respect to bottom and sides of a given body of water or with respect to passing another ship. Shiphandler can regulate them by proper and timely use of the controllable forces at his disposal
