MK 116 Anti-Submarine Weapon Control System [ASWCS]
Underwater Fire Control System
The MK 116 Anti-Submarine Weapon Control System [ASWCS] is deployed in a number of configurations on various ship classes. It is used in conjunction with the SQS-53A and SQR-19 sonars on the Kidd-class DDG. The MK 116 Underwater Fire Control System takes all the tracking data from the AN/SQS-53C and ITASS sonar systems to put together a big picture of the threat targets course and speed. Using this inf ormation and working with Gunners Mates and Torpedo Men, the system operators are able to fire a torpedo over the side using the (SVTT) Surface Vessel Torpedo Tubes or fire an ASROC (Anti-Submarine Rocket Assisted Torpedo) from the VLS system.
Arleigh Burke-class FOT&E (OT-IIIB) was conducted aboard USS CURTIS WILBUR (DDG-54) in June 1994, primarily to resolve outstanding ASW issues. DDG-54 successfully demonstrated the capability to support action against ASW threats simultaneously with Anti-Air Warfare (AAW) and Strike Warfare (STW) in independent and limited combined operations as a member of a surface action group (SAG). All major deficiencies in the AN/SQQ-89(V)6 with the Mk 116 Mod 7 ASWCS were corrected.
