 1.  THIS ADVISORY IS APPLICABLE TO DD963 CLASS TOMAHAWK ABL SHIPS.             

                                                                                

 2.  THE PURPOSE OF THIS ADVISORY IS TO NOTIFY ALCON OF THE                     

 POTENTIAL HAZARD CONCERNING SIMULTANEOUS ENGAGEMENT OF ASROC OR                

 MT51 GUN WHILE ABL IS IN RAISED POSITION.  IT IS POSSIBLE FOR ASROC            

 OR MT51 TO FIRE INTO A RAISED ABL.                                             

                                                                                

 3.  THE DD963 CLASS ABL SHIPS ARE PROVIDED WITH INDICATOR LIGHTS ON            

 ABL STATUS PANELS IN CIC AND ASROC LAUNCHER CONTROL ROOM TO ALERT              

 OPERATORS THAT A PORT/STBD ABL IS UNLOCKED AND COULD BE                        

 ELEVATING/RAISED.  IF THE PORT/STBD ABL INDICATOR LIGHT IS LIT, THE            

 ASROC LAUNCHER MUST NOT BE FIRED.  ABSENCE OF AN INDICATOR LIGHT               

 SIGNIFIES THE ABL'S ARE STOWED.  A PRESS-TEST BUTTON, ON THE ABL               

 STATUS PANEL, IS PROVIDED TO TEST THE INDICATOR LIGHTS.                        

                                                                                

 4.  THE ASWCFO OPERATOR, ASROC LAUNCHER CAPTAIN AND GUN CONTROL                

 OFFICER SHALL REMAIN AWARE OF THE ABL STATUS PANEL INDICATOR AND               

 TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION (DO NOT FIRE), TO PREVENT FIRING INTO A                

 RAISED ABL.                                                                    

                                                                                

 5.  PERSONNEL ON THE BRIDGE SHALL CLOSELY MONITOR ALL WEAPONS                  

 ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY AND ALERT THE TAO OF ANY POTENTIAL CONFLICT                

 BETWEEN ASROC, MT51, AND ABL FIRING.                                           

                                                                                

 6.  THE POINTING AND FIRING CUTOUT CAMS FOR MT51 AND ASROC ARE SET             

 FOR ABL IN THE STOWED POSITION.                                                

                                                                                

 7.  NAVSEA WILL INITIATE ACTION TO INSTALL AN ADDITIONAL ABL STATUS            

 PANEL AT THE MK 86 CONTROL OFFICER'S CONSOLE, TO ALERT THE OPERATOR            

 THAT A PORT/STBD ABL IS UNLOCKED AND MT51 SHOULD NOT BE FIRED.                 

 ADDITIONALLY, AS AN ADDED SAFETY FEATURE, NAVSEA WILL INVESTIGATE              

 INSTALLATION OF AN ADDITIONAL TV MONITOR AT THE LAUNCHER CAPTAINS              

 POSITION AND THE MK 86 CONTROL OFFICERS CONSOLE TO PROVIDE A VIEW              

 OF BOTH ABL'S.                                                                 

                                                                                

 8.  NAVSEA HAS DEVELOPED ALL PRELIMINARY DATA RELATING TO                      

 SHIPALT/ORDALTS REQUIRED TO PROVIDE THE FIRING CIRCUIT INTERLOCKS              

 WHICH WILL PRECLUDE ANY SAFETY HAZARD DURING SIMULTANEOUS                      

 ENGAGEMENTS OF THE WEAPON SYSTEM AND IS AT PRESENT ATTEMPTING TO               

 OBTAIN FUNDING FOR FINAL DEVELOPMENT AND INSTALLATION.                         

                                                                                

 9.  TYCOMS ARE REQUESTED TO REVISE THE FIRING DOCTRINE FOR THESE               

 SHIPS TO REFLECT THIS CLASS ADVISORY.
