USS Seawolf was the only submarine built with a liquid metal nuclear reactor. While the liquid metal (sodium) provided for a more efficient power plant, it also caused several hazards for the ship and crew including fire potential and highly corrosive effects. After approximately two years of operation Seawolf was converted to a pressurized water reactor because of these concerns.
