M44 155mm Self-propelled Gun

Although the M44 155mm Self-propelled Gun has been withdrawn from service with the US Army, it is still operated by a number of other countries, including Turkey. The upgraded M44T has increased mobility, firepower and reliability. The M44T upgrade package was originally developed in the late 1980s by a German consortium of GLS, MTU and Rheinmetall. The latter company was responsible for the ordnance which is similar to that used on the upgraded M109A3G of the German Army which in turn is based on that used in the towed FH-70 system. Turkey has modernised its old US-built 155mm M44 guns in a number of key areas including the installation of a 155mm/39 calibre ordnance and the replacement of the petrol engine by a more fuel-efficient German MTU MB 833Aa 501 diesel engine developing 450hp, coupled to the original Allison automatic transmission. The original M44 fired a high-explosive projectile to a maximum range of 14.6km while the upgraded M44T has a maximum range of 24.70km using standard ammunition or 30km using enhanced projectiles.
