A. DESCRIPTION: THE M24 SNIPER WEAPON SYSTEM (SWS) IS A NON-
DEVELOPMENTAL ITEM CONSISTING OF A 7.62 MM BOLT ACTION 6 SHOT
REPEATING RIFLE CHAMBERED FOR THE 308 WIN M118 SPECIAL BALL
AMMUNITION, DAY OPTIC SIGHT WITH 10 POWER MAGNIFICATION AND AD-
JUSTABLE FOCUS, METALLIC IRON SIGHTS, DEPLOYMENT KIT, CLEANING
KIT, (RIFLE AND OPTIC), SOFT RIFLE CARRYING CASE, OPTIC CASE,
SYSTEM CASE, OPERATORS MANUAL, AND BIPOD ( OPTIONAL).
ASSOCIATED ITEMS OF EQUIPMENT (ASIOE) INCLUDE A SNIPER NIGHT
SIGHT (LIN Z12132), AND AN IMPROVED SPOTTING SCOPE (LIN Z98401).
THE COMBAT WEIGHT: (RIFLE WITH SLING, DAY OPTIC SIGHT, AND FULL
MAGAZINE): 14.25 LBS, THE SWS TOTAL WEIGHT (LESS ASIOE): 64 LBS.
B. CAPABILITIES: THE M24 SWS IS CHAMBERED FOR 7.62MM 308 WIN
SPECIAL BALL AMMUNITION, BARREL RIFLING: 5 RADIAL WITH 1 TURN IN
11.2 INCHES, MUZZLE VELOCITY: APPROXIMATELY 2,600 FEET PER
SECOND, MAXIMUM EFFECTIVE RANGE: 800 METERS, MAGAZINE CAPACITY:
5 ROUNDS OF 7.62MM, DAY OPTIC SIGHT MAGNIFICATION: 10 POWER WITH
ADJUSTABLE FOCUS, METALLIC IRON SIGHTS ARE PROVIDED FOR BACK-UP
SIGHTING SYSTEM AND CAN BE QUICKLY INSTALLED, THE RIFLE STOCK HAS
AN ADJUSTABLE BUTT PLATE TO ACCOMODATE LENGTH OF PULL.
C. EMPLOYMENT: THE M24 SWS WILL BE USED BY TRAINED MARKSMEN TO
TO DELIVER PRECISION FIRE AT SELECTED TARGETS IN SUPPORT OF
ASSIGNED MISSIONS REQUIRING ENGAGEMENT OF DESIGNATED PERSONNEL OR
MATERIEL OBJECTIVES UP TO 800 METERS.
D. BASIS OF ISSUE: THE M24 SWS WILL REPLACE THE M21 SNIPER RIFLE
SYSTEM, LIN R95422, ON A SELECTED BASIS THROUGHOUT THE ARMY.

G. PERSONNEL/MAINTENANCE IMPACTS:
(1) OPERATOR:
(A) CREW SIZE/MOS: CREW SIZE IS ONE, GENERAL PURPOSE
USER, WITH ASI B4 OR W3, AS DESIGNATED BY THE COMMANDER.
(B) TRAINING (MOS/GENERAL): RESIDENT INSTITUTIONAL TRAIN-
ING WILL BE INTEGRATED INTO EXISTING COURSES WHENEVER POSSIBLE.
-- USAJFKSWCS WILL INCORPORATE TRAINING ON EMPLOY-
MENT OF THE SWS INTO THE EXISTING SPECIAL OPERATIONS TARGET INTER-
DICTION COURSE (SOTIC).
-- THE USA INFANTRY SCHOOL WILL INCORPORATE TRAIN-
ING ON THE SWS INTO EXISTING INSTITUTIONAL COURSES TO INCLUDE THE
SNIPER COURSE.
-- SUSTAINMENT TRAINING WILL BE CONDUCTED AT UNIT
LEVEL USING TECHNICAL MANUALS AND EXPORTABLE TRAINING PACKAGES
DEVELOPED AND DISTRIBUTED BY THE MATERIAL DEVELOPER/CONTRACTOR.
(2) MAINTAINERS:
(A) OPERATOR: GENERAL PURPOSE USER. THE M24 SWS WILL BE
SUPPORTED BY THE OPERATOR PERFORMING PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE CHECKS
AND SERVICES, AND REPAIRED BY REPLACEMENT OF SELECTED PARTS. ALL
OTHER MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR ACTIONS WILL BE PERFORMED BY CONTRACTOR
LOGISTIC SUPPORT.
(A) UL: UNIT SUPPLY SPECIALIST, MOS 92Y.
(B) DS: FIRE CONTROL REPAIRER, MOS 45G.
H. SPECIAL NOTES:
(1) THIS ITEM IS APPROPRIATE FOR INCLUSION IN AR 71-13.
(2) ALL MAINTENANCE FOR THE M24 SNIPER WEAPON SYSTEM IS OPERATOR
LEVEL. ANY DEFICIENCES THAT OCCUR WHICH THE OPERATOR CANNOT CORRECT
WILL REQUIRE THE WEAPON AND DAY OPTIC SIGHT BE TURNED IN TO THE
PROPER MAINTENANCE/SUPPLY CHANNEL FOR RETURN TO THE CONTRACTOR.
(3) UNIT LEVEL MAINTENANCE IS LIMITED TO RECEIVING, STORING, AND
ASSISTING THE OPERATOR TO PREPARE THE SWS FOR SHIPMENT TO THE
MANUFACTURER FOR REQUIRED MAINTENANCE.
(4) DIRECT SUPPORT MAINTENANCE OF THE ASIOEs IMPROVED SPOTTING
SCOPE, AND THE SNIPER NIGHT SIGHT IS PERFORMED BY MOS 45G.
