Basis of Issue Plan - BOIP
A. DESCRIPTION:
(1) THE M113A3 WILL BE AN ARMORED, AMPHIBIOUS, PERSONNEL
CARRIER. IT WILL PROVIDE CROSS-COUNTRY MOBILITY AND ALL-AROUND
PROTECTION AGAINST SHRAPNEL AND SMALL-ARMS FIRE FOR THE CREW AND
PASSENGERS. ITS ARMAMENT CONSISTS OF AN M2 HB HEAVY MACHINEGUN,
EXCEPT WHEN USED AS AN AMBULANCE. IT IS CAPABLE OF TRANSPORTING
A 10-MAN INFANTRY SQUAD WITH A DRIVER OR FOUR LITTER PATIENTS, AN
ATTENDING MEDIC, AND A DRIVER WITH THE AMBULANCE KIT INSTALLED.
THE M113 IS EQUIPPED WITH A GAS ENGINE THAT HAS RECEIVED SEVERAL
IMPROVEMENTS. THE M113A1 WAS UPGRADED BY INSTALLING A DIESEL
ENGINE. THE M113A2 MODIFICATION FURTHER IMPROVES THE M113A1 BY
MODIFYING ITS SUSPENSION SYSTEM TO INCREASE CROSS-COUNTRY
MOBILITY AND IMPROVING TO THE ENGINE'S COOLING SYSTEM.
(2) THE M113A3 MODIFIES THE M113A2 BY THE ADDITION OF
SPALL LINERS TO THE VEHICLE'S INTERIOR, PLACEMENT OF THE FUEL
SUPPLY IN EXTERNAL TANKS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE REAR RAMP, AND
INSTALLATION OF A 275-HP, 6V53T, TURBO-CHARGED ENGINE WITH AN
X200-4 TRANSMISSION. THIS ITEM IS APPROPRIATE FOR INCLUSION IN
AR 310-34.
B. CAPABILITIES: THE AMPHIBIOUS CAPABILITY IS RETAINED ON
THE M113A3.
C. EMPLOYMENT: USED AS A PERSONNEL TRANSPORT VEHICLE IN
THOSE UNITS CURRENTLY ASSIGNED THE MII3A2, LIN D12087.
D. BASIS OF ISSUE: THE M113A3 REPLACES THE M113A2, LIN
D12087, ON A ONE-FOR-ONE BASIS.
E. POWER REQUIREMENTS: N/A.
F. TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS: THE M113A3 IS C130
TRANSPORTABLE.

EQUIPMENT WILL NOT BE REQUIRED TO SUPPORT THESE VEHICLES.
