A. DESCRIPTION: HEAD-MOUNTED, SELF-CONTAINED NIGHT VISION GOGGLE USED FOR WALKING, DRIVING, WEAPONS FIRING, SHORT RANGE SURVEILLANCE, AND OTHER TASKS SUCH AS MAP READING, VEHICLE MAINTENANCE, AND FIRST AID. THE PVS-5 WEIGHS 1.9 LBS, HAS A 40-DEGREE FIELD OF FIRE AND A RANGE OF 50 METERS STARLIGHT, 150 METERS MOONLIGHT, AGAINST MAN-SIZE TARGETS. THE GOGGLES CONTAIN AN IR LIGHT SOURCE TO AID IN CLOSE-END VIEWING. THIS ITEM IS NOT APPROPRIATE FOR INCLUSION IN AR 310-34. B. CAPABILITIES: THE AN/PVS-5 WILL HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO PROVIDE CONTINUOUS, PASSIVE OPERATION FOR UP TO FIFTEEN HOURS WITHOUT BATTERY REPLACEMENT. IT WILL ALLOW THE OPERATOR TO PERFORM NIGHT/LOW-LIGHT FUNCTIONS IN THE SAME MANNER AS IN DAYLIGHT. AN INFRARED LIGHT SOURCE AND A POSITIVE CONTROL SWITCH WILL PERMIT CLOSE-IN VIEWING UNDER LIMITED LIGHT. AN EYEPIECE DIOPTER WILL ALLOW USE BY PERSONNEL REQUIRING CORRECTIVE LENSES. C. EMPLOYMENT: THE AN/PVS-5 WILL BE USED BY CBT/CS/CSS ELEMENTS OF INFANTRY, ARMOR, AIR DEFENSE, FIELD ARTILLERY, AVIATION, ENGINEER, INTELLIGENCE, MP, TRANSPORTATION, SIGNAL, QUARTERMASTER, CHEMICAL, MAINTENANCE, AND MISSILE & MUNITIONS UNITS TO ASSIST IN THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE FOLLOWING TASKS: (1) COMMAND AND CONTROL. (2) FIRE DIRECTION AND CONTROL. (3) RECONNAISSANCE/CLOSE-IN SURVEILLANCE. (4) TERRAIN NAVIGATION. (5) EMERGENCY MEDICAL AID. (6) VEHICLE OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE. (7) TRAFFIC CONTROL. (8) SELECTION OF FIGHTING POSITIONS. (9) REAR AREA AND CRITICAL POINT SECURITY. (10) PATROLLING. (11) RADAR TEAM EMPLOYMENT. (12) COMBAT ENGINEER TASKS IN SUPPORT OF MOBILITY, COUNTERMOBILITY, AND SURVIVABILITY. (13) REARM, REFUEL, AND OTHER RESUPPLY OPERATIONS. (14) FLIGHT LINE FUNCTIONS. D. BASIS OF ISSUE: (1) INFANTRY: - INFANTRY BN/RANGER BN/REGT HHC, RIFLE CO, (ALL VARIATIONS) LRSU/PATHFINDER, 1:1 ALL PERSONNEL NOT IN LEADER POSITION OR NOT EQUIPPED WITH WEAPON SIGHT WHO REQUIRE NIGHT MOBILITY AND AGILITY AND WHO COULD BECOME MEMBERS OF INFANTRY BN TASK FORCE OR OPERATIONAL TEAM. (2) COMBAT, COMBAT SUPPORT, COMBAT SERVICE SUPPORT: A. ONE PER VEHICLE DRIVER IN UNITS ORGANIC TO OR IN HABITUAL SUPPORT OF THE DIVISION. B. ONE PER VEHICLE COMMANDER IN UNITS ORGANIC TO OR IN HABITUAL SUPPORT OF THE DIVISION. C. ONE PER TWO VEHICLES THAT HABITUALLY TRANSPORT SUPPLIES FROM CORPS AND DIVISION UNITS TO UNITS OPERATING FORWARD OF THE DIVISION REAR BOUNDARY. D. ONE PER WHEELED AMBULANCE THAT OPERATES FORWARD OF THE DIVISION REAR BOUNDARY. E. ONE PER MAINTENANCE, SIGNAL, OR CHEMICAL VEHICLE ORGANIC TO UNITS LOCATED BEHIND THE DIVISION REAR BOUNDARY, BUT FORWARD OF THE CORPS REAR BOUNDARY THAT ARE REQUIRED TO PROVIDE HABITUAL SUPPORT TO THE DIVISION AND OPERATE FORWARD OF THE DIVISION REAR BOUNDARY. F. TWO PER WEAPONS PRIME MOVER. G. ONE PER VEHICLE IN SELECTED HIGH-PRIORITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT OPERATE BEHIND THE DIVISION REAR BOUNDARY (I.E., PERSHING, NUCLEAR SECURITY, ETC.). H. ONE PER COMPANY AIDMAN IN THE MED SECTIONS OR SQUADS OF THE MED PLT OF COMBAT BNS OPERATING FORWARD OF THE BRIGADE REAR BOUNDARY FOR USE IN LOCATING AND ADMINISTRING FIRST AID WITHOUT THE USE OF WHITE LIGHT.
