Basis of Issue Plan - BOIP
A. DESCRIPTION: THE LASER RANGEFINDER IS A HAND-HELD,
LIGHTWEIGHT, BATTERY OPERATED, ELECTRO-OPTICAL RANGEFINDER.
B. CAPABILITIES: THE GVS-5 PROVIDES DISTANCE MEASURING BY
USING A DIGITAL READOUT WHICH APPEARS IN THE FIELD OF VIEW WHEN
RANGING BUTTON IS PRESSED. THE GVS-5 CAN BE HAND-HELD, LIKE
BINOCULARS OR MOUNTED WITH AN AZ-E1 HEAD ON A TRIPOD. IT WILL
PROVIDE RANGE, AZIMUTH AND ELEVATION READINGS TO A TARGET.
C. EMPLOYMENT: IN FIELD ARTILLERY UNITS, THE GVS-5 IS
EMPLOYED IN CONVENTIONAL SURVEY TEAMS, PADS PARTIES, COLT TEAMS,
FIRE SUPPORT TEAMS AND FIST HEADQUARTERS.
D. BASIS OF ISSUE:
FIELD ARTILLERY:
(1) ONE PER FIST TEAM FORWARD OBSERVER.
(2) ONE PER COLT TEAM.
(3) ONE PER FIST HEADQUARTERS.
(4) ONE PER PADS PARTY.
(5) ONE PER CONVENTIONAL SURVEY TEAM.
INFANTRY SCHOOL:
(1) ONE PER FIRE SUPPORT ELEMENT (FSE).
(2) TWO PER SCOUT PLATOON.
(3) FOUR PER FIST TEAM.
(4) ONE PER LONG RANGE SURVEILLANCE TEAM.
ARMOR SCHOOL:
(1) ONE PER SCOUT SECTION IN ARMOR AND CAVALRY UNITS.
ENGINEER SCHOOL:
(1) THREE PER ENGINEER COMPANY IN THE ACR.
(2) THREE PER ENGINEER COMPANY IN ARMOR/INFANTRY
SEPARATE BRIGADES.
(3) TWO PER ENGINEER COMPANY IN HEAVY DIVISION.
E. POWER REQUIREMENTS: RECHARGABLE NICAD BATTERY.
F. TRANSPORTATION REQUIREMENTS: HAND-HELD ON TRIPOD MOUNTED,
CAN BE TRANSPORTED WITH UNIT'S ORGANIC VEHICLES.
G. PERSONNEL/MAINTENANCE IMPACTS:
(1) OPERATOR:
(A) CREW SIZE/MOS: AS DESIGNATED BY COMMANDER.
(2) TRAINING REQUIREMENTS (MOS/GENERAL): NO SPECIAL
OR ADDITIONAL MOS TRAINING IS REQUIRED.

(A) OPERATOR AS DIRECTED BY COMMANDER.
