AN/AVR-2 Laser Warning System

The AN/AVR-2 Laser Detecting Set (LDS) is a passive laser warning system which receives, processes and displays threat information resulting from aircraft illumination by lasers. The threat information is displayed on the AN/APR-39A(V)1 Radar Detecting Set indicator in the AH-1F cockpit. The AN/AVR-2 LDS responds to lasers associated with laser range finders and laser guided weapons. The AN/AVR-2 LDS consists of one interface unit comparator and four identical sensor units. The total system weight is 21 pounds.

The AN/AVR-2A is a passive laser warning system which receives, processes and displays threat information resulting from aircraft illumination by laser designators, range finders and beam riding missiles. The threat information is displayed on the AN/APR-39A(V)1 Radar Detecting Set indicator in the cockpit. The AN/AVR-2A LDS is derived from the basic AN/AVR-2 LDS through the incorporation of several engineering change proposals (ECPs). These ECPs include: incorporation of the Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System-Air-to-Ground Engagement System interface; incorporation of a removable user data module to the comparator interface to permit a means to apply software changes and system declassification; and increased Band III sensitivity for improved threat detection performance. The AN/AVR-2A LDS consists of one interface unit comparator and four identical sensor units. The total system weight is 21 pounds.

The AN/AVR-2A Laser Warning System (LWS) for helicopter and transport aircraft [AH-64A/D, MH-47E, MH-60K, OH-58D, EH-60A] provides advance warning of laser energy directed against the aircraft, including both laser range finders and laser guidance systems, enabling the aircrew to take evasive action. The Laser Detecting Set detects engagement by laser-aided weapons and delivers sufficient warning to the aircrew to allow evasive lifesaving action to be taken. Consisting of four sensor units and a central interface unit, the system detects, identifies, and characterizes laser-aided weapons 360 degrees around and +/- 45 degrees in elevation about the aircraft. The system also functions as a laser receiver for MILES/AGES training operations. The system is currently in full production with the manufacturer, Hughes, Los Angeles, CA.
