Slide 14 of 24
Notes:
THE TRANSVERSE FORCE GENERATED BY THE PROPELLER IS CAUSED BY SIDE FORCE. THE IMPACT OF THE SIDE FORCE VARIES BASED ON THE SCREW CONFIGURATION.
THE IMPACT ON SINGLE, FIXED PITCH PROPELLERS IS SHOWN IN THIS SLIDE.
GOING AHEAD, THE SIDE FORCE ON THE STERN WILL BE TO STARBOARD, FORCING THE BOW TO PORT. THEREFORE THE SHIP WILL TURN MORE READILY TO PORT.
STERN WALK WILL BE MORE PRONOUNCED WHEN GOING ASTERN ON FIXED PITCH SHIPS. (NOTE: THIS IS BECAUSE, IN ADDITION TO THE WALK, THE WASH OF THE PROPELLER IS NOW DIRECTED AT THE STERN OF THE SHIP. THE UPPER HALF OF THE WASH BANKS AGAINST THE STARBOARD SIDE OF THE COUNTER, THE LOWER HALF SPILLS UNDER THE KEEL.)
