                                                      LIGHT INFANTRY DIVISION
                                   DESIGNATION: _____ INFANTRY DIVISION (LIGHT)


1.  MISSION.  Close with and destroy the enemy as well as
to control land areas, including population and resources.


2.  ASSIGNMENT.  To a corps or joint task force.


3.  CAPABILITIES.

    A.  At Level 1, this unit:

        (1)  Disperses widely throughout a large area and
conducts synchronized, but decentralized operations
primarily at night or during periods of limited visibility.

        (2)  Conducts operations exploiting the advantages
of restrictive terrain and limited visibility.

        (3)  Capable of operating independently in
operations other than war.

        (4)  Conducts urban and jungle warfare and
infiltration operations.

    B.  The columns under levels 2 and 3 adapt this
organization for reduced operational capabilities in
decrements of 10%, from approximately 90% for level 2
to approximately 80% for level 3.

    C.  This unit is not adaptable to Type B organization.

    D.  The columns designated by levels 1 throuhg 3 are
designed to relate to the categories established in
AR 220-1, Unit Status Reporting.

    E.  Individuals of this organization, except medical
personnel and chaplains can assist in the coordinated
defense of the unit's area or installation.

    F.  This unit is dependent upon:

        (1)  Appropriate elements of the corps or JTF for
legal, finance, and personnel and administrative services.

        (2)  Requires corps or JTF augmentation of
aviation, artillery, military police, engineer, civil
affairs, psyops, and transportation units.


4.  BASIS OF ALLOCATION.  As required to a corps or Joint
Task Force.


5.  CATEGORY.  For category designation of the components
see the Section I of each TOE.


6.  MOBILITY.  For mobility of the components of this
division, see the Section I of each TOE.
