THE PRIMARY MISSION OF THE DIVISION IS TO DEPLOY RAPIDLY ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD AND BE PREPARED TO CONDUCT COMBAT OPERATIONS TO PROTECT US NATIONAL INTERESTS. SPECIFIC MISSIONS ARE TO: A. SEIZE AND HOLD VIA VERTICAL ENVELOPMENT VITAL OBJECTIVES BEHIND ENEMY LINES UNTIL LINKING WITH SUPPORTING FORCES. B. EXPLOIT THE EFFECTS OF NUCLEAR OR CHEMICAL WEAPONS. C. RESCUE US NATIONALS BESEIGED OVERSEAS. D. REINFORCE FORWARD-DEPLOYED FORCES (IF AUGMENTED WITH TRANSPORTATION). E. SERVE AS A STRATEGIC OR THEATER RESERVE. F. CONDUCT LARGE-SCALE TACTICAL RAIDS. G. OCCUPY AREAS OR REINFORCE FRIENDLY OR ALLIED UNITS BEYOND THE IMMEDIATE REACH OF GROUND FORCES. H. CAPTURE ONE OR MORE INTERMEDIATE STAGING BASES OR FORWARD OPERATING BASES FOR PROTRACTED GROUND/AIR OPERATIONS. 2. ASSIGNMENT. NORMALLY TO AN AIRBORNE CORPS OR JOINT TASK FORCE, BUT CAN CONDUCT INDEPENDENT COMBAT OPERATIONS. 3. CAPABILITIES. A. AT LEVEL 1, THIS UNIT: (1) CONDUCTS OFFENSIVE, DEFENSIVE, DELAY OPERATIONS AND LARGE SCALE TACTICAL RAIDS AGAINST ENEMY INSURGENT AND LIGHT INFANTRY FORCES. (2) CONDUCTS REAR BATTLE OPERATIONS AGAINST ENEMY INSURGENT, LIGHT INFANTRY, AND TANK/MOTORIZED FORCES. (3) CONDUCTS OFFENSIVE, DEFENSIVE, AND DELAY OPERATIONS IN CLOSE OR MIXED TERRAIN AGAINST ENEMY TANK/MOTORIZED FORCES. (4) CONDUCTS LIMITED DELAY OPERATIONS IN OPEN TERRAIN AGAINST ENEMY TANK/MOTORIZED FORCES. (5) CONDUCTS AIRBORNE OPERATIONS. (6) CONDUCTS LIMITED INDEPENDENT OPERATIONS. (7) MAINTAINS THE CAPABILITY TO RAPIDLY ACCEPT AND INTEGRATE AUGMENTING FORCES. (8) STRATEGICALLY DEPLOYS TO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. B. THE COLUMNS UNDER LEVELS 2 AND 3 ADAPT THIS TABLE FOR REDUCED OPERATIONAL CAPABILITIES IN DECREMENTS OF 10%, FROM APPROXIMATELY 90% FOR LEVEL 2, TO APPROXIMATELY 80% FOR LEVEL 3. C. THIS UNIT IS NOT ADAPTABLE TO TYPE B ORGANIZATION. D. THE COLUMNS DESIGNATED BY LEVEL 1 THROUGH 3 ARE DESIGNED TO RELATE TO THE CATEGORIES ESTABLISHED IN AR 220-1, UNIT STATUS REPORTING. E.
