1.  MISSION.  TO PROVIDE LARGE AREA SMOKE SUPPORT FOR A HEAVY
DIVISION FROM THE MAIN BATTLE AREA FORWARD.

2.  ASSIGNMENT.  TO A CHEMICAL BATTALION, TOE
03475L100.

3.  CAPABILITIES.

  A.  AT LEVEL 1, THIS UNIT PROVIDES:

      (1)  A SMOKE HAZE FOR LARGE AREAS FROM .6 TO 1.2
KILOMETERS IN WIDTH AND SEVERAL KILOMETERS IN LENGTH PER EACH
PLATOON DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER.

      (2)  SIMULTANEOUS COVERAGE OF SEVERAL AREAS WHEN
EMPLOYING SMOKE GENERATOR PLATOONS AND SQUADS ON SEPARATE
MISSIONS.

  B.  THE COLUMNS UNDER LEVELS 2 AND 3 ADAPT THIS TABLE FOR
REDUCED OPERATIONAL CAPABILITIES IN DECREMENTS OF 10%, FROM
APPROXIMATELY 90% FOR LEVEL 2 TO APPROXIMATELY 80% FOR LEVEL
3.

  C.  THIS UNIT IS NOT ADAPTABLE TO A TYPE B ORGANIZATION.

  D.  THE COLUMNS DESIGNATED BY LEVELS 1 THROUGH 3 ARE
DESIGNED TO RELATE TO THE CATEGORIES ESTABLISHED BY AR 220-1,
UNIT STATUS REPORTING.

  E.  INDIVIDUALS OF THIS ORGANIZATION CAN ASSIST IN THE
COORDINATED DEFENSE OF THE UNIT'S AREA OR INSTALLATION.

  F.  THIS UNIT PERFORMS UNIT MAINTENANCE ON ALL ORGANIC
EQUIPMENT EXCEPT COMMUNICATIONS SECURITY (COMSEC) EQUIPMENT.

4.  BASIS OF ALLOCATION.  ONE PER HEAVY DIVISION.

5.  CATEGORY.  THIS UNIT IS DESIGNATED A CATEGORY II UNIT.

6.  MOBILITY.

  A.  THIS UNIT IS CAPABLE OF TRANSPORTING 183,700 POUNDS
(11,375 CUBIC FEET) OF TOE EQUIPMENT WITH ORGANIC VEHICLES.

  B.  THIS UNIT HAS 51,246 POUNDS (3,612 CUBIC FEET) OF TOE
EQUIPMENT REQUIRING TRANSPORTATION.

  C.  THIS UNIT REQUIRES 100% OF ITS TOE EQUIPMENT AND
SUPPLIES TO BE TRANSPORTED IN A SINGLE LIFT USING ITS

                        EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

1.  PURPOSE.  To summarize the results of a cyclic review for the
Headquarters, Department of the Army (HQDA) approved chemical
company, smoke generator (mech) L-edition table of organization and
equipment.  The review was conducted to ensure that the document
reflects the latest doctrine and to revalidate the requirements for
personnel and equipment.  This executive summary is accompanied by a
narrative discussion that outlines the operational function of the
draft TOE (DTOE) and discusses personnel and major items of
equipment.

     e.  Major Changes.  As part of the cyclic review process,
this DTOE has been updated to reflect current standards of grade
(SG), manpower requirements criteria (MARC), basis-of-issue plans
(BOIPs), and doctrine.  There are no structural changes.


2.  MISSION/CAPABILITIES/SECTION I.

     a.  MISSION.  To provide large area smoke support for a
heavy division from the main battle area forward.

     b.  CAPABILITIES:  Provides a smoke haze for a large area
from .6 to 1.2 kilometers in width and several kilometers in
length per each platoon depending on the weather.  It also can
provide simultaneous coverage of several areas when employing
smoke generator platoons and squads on separate missions.

     c.  SECTION I:  See TOE section I for a complete list of
capabilities and limitations of this organization.


3.  ASSIGNMENT:  To a Chemical Battalion, TOEs
03475L100.


4.  PERSONNEL.

     a.  Differences between design and documented objective TOE
(OTOE) requirements where the design OTOE equals the unit
strength cap:  N/A

     b.  MARC Deviations.  There are no MARC deviations.
Positions are fully justified by MARC requirements or by
doctrine.

     c.  The net officer/noncommissioned officer (NCO) force
impact of this TOE is an increase/decrease of zero officers and
an increase of two NCOs.

     d.  The risk resulting from decrements is minimal.


5.  EQUIPMENT.

     a.  Equipment reflected in this TOE represents the minimum
essential wartime requirements.

     b.  The following items of modernization equipment were
approved by HQDA for inclusion in the base TOE (BTOE) and have

6.  COST.

     a.  A cost analysis summary for each OTOE is provided in
paragraph 7.

     b.  Force structure information for each TOE is based on
current M force and E-Date 9804.

     c.  HQDA-approved commodity consumption rates were used in
the development of these TOEs.

     d.  The cyclic review of this DTOE has produced a cost
increase of $62,430.  The increased costs are due to application
of doctrine and related equipment authorizations.  Cost information
is shown in paragraph 7.

1.  GENERAL.

     a.  References:

of this table of organization and equipment (TOE).

         (1)  Cyclic review.

         (2)  This base TOE (BTOE) applies concept changes,
updates manpower requirements criteria (MARC), and applies L-
edition TOE development procedures.

         (3)  This version of the BTOE has been prepared in
accordance with the provisions of current TOE development
regulations and guidance.

         (4)  All equipment readiness codes in this TOE have been
reviewed to ensure strict compliance with criteria in AR 220-1,
Unit Status Reporting.  They also have been reviewed to ensure
they are aligned at the paragraph level of detail.

         (5)  The unit MARC code is 21A.  This is a combat
support unit that operates in the division area.  The unit is
mobile and normally maneuvers/moves.


2.  EMPLOYMENT.  The chemical company, smoke generator (mech) is
normally assigned to a chemical battalion in the corps area for
administration, logistics, and command.  The company is designed
to be attached to or in direct support of a heavy division for
forward area missions.  Employment is from the forward line of
troops rearward to the division rear boundary.  When in support
of the division, the company is normally placed under the
operational control of the chemical officer.  When not assigned
to a division, the company is under the command and control of
the chemical battalion for corps area missions.


3.  METHODS OF OPERATION AND FUNCTION.

    a.  PARAGRAPH 01, HEADQUARTERS SECTION.

        (1)  The function of the headquarters section is to
provide command and control of the company.  It operates the
company operations center for coordination of the activities of
the support squads and the smoke squads.  The section also
operates the unit supply and food service function.
